Bahamian Treasures

When I was in the Bahamas, at each of the straw markets that we went to, there were these wooden elephants that I fell in love with. Finally, at the last market we visited, I decided to bite the bullet and get one. What better way to remember the Bahamas with a genuine, handcrafted Bahamian elephant??
And then tonight, I was studying my cute little curio, and saw a small round sticker under his trunk. Turning him over for closer scrutiny, I saw three words that made me burst out laughing.

Made in Philippines

do they even HAVE elephants in the bahamas? or in the philippines for that matter?

funny story. reminds me of israel where shopkeepers make a big deal about whether their wares are made in israel or not...not that you can ever believe them. but there's plenty of stuff from china on sale there.

and that reminds of the guys who own olive wood shops and always claim they hand-carved every piece in their shop. that always cracked me up, because most of them bought their wares and had never touched a carving knife in their life.

how's that for a random train of though?

When Lindsay and I went to Scotland 8 years ago, I decided to buy a walking stick for a souvenir. I was quite pleased with the one that I bought at a small shop in rural Scotland - wood, with a nice brass handle.

It wasn't until that night when I was unpacking it that I noticed that "small round sticker." Mine said, "Made in China."

I should have bought the Braveheart sword instead, even if it was 4 times as much. I've regretted that ever since. :)

Lol! :) In the capitol city of Ghana there were all these handmade giraffes. They were beautiful… but Ghanaian? Giraffes do not reside in Ghana. So we would give the vendors a hard time saying “Very nice giraffe, but where are the giraffes in Ghana?” They would smirk and reply, “These tourists, they don’t know. They just like the giraffe!”

Ha ha. I thought I knew what you were going to say after I saw the "three words" part. Only my guess was "made in China." Maybe you can take comfort in the fact that "made in Philippines" is quite a bit rarer...

Ha!
It reminds me of a bunch of plaques that were in the Bryan College cafeteria for a while -- they had these big American flags along with uber-patriotic post-911 quotations on them about how America's resolve is stronger than steel etc. etc.
Ethan and I got a great kick out of the fact that the back side of the plaques read "made in China"
